In the parking, security guard Brett Schott pointed out that they were being watched by a shady looking man. The woman in custody told them that her boyfriend, Neil Beckman, was not dangerous.

Moments later, Beckman approached them, puling out a .38 revolver and opening fire. Even though Sergeant Young received the first shot to the face, he attempted to disarm Beckman, despite additional shots ripping through his right bicep, left side of his body, and left hand. At this point Sergeant Young's injuries to both arms left him unable to draw his firearm on suspect who was now attempting to release the shotgun from inside the patrol car. He then asked Explorer Covella to unholster his firearm and place it in his right arm for him. Sergeant Young was able to fire four rounds at Beckman who collapsed and later died.
